Travel Tuesday: Ocean Shores

The vast expanse of sandy beach, waves a fringe between sand and sky.

Since we needed to move the motorhome anyway, we decided to plan a trip somewhere. Many times we had pulled the motorhome out for some reason, and not thinking beyond that, found ourselves wishing that we could just go somewhere while we were in travel mode.  Instead we just went back to our home park and settled in. Even though our home is mobile, it's a matter of an hour or two of preparation to switch from parked mode to travel mode, especially when we've been parked for a month or more. Things tend to migrate out to the deck, or inside and then I must remember which goes where for traveling.

We started out with the idea of  two or three days at the coast. A quick getaway that would satisfy the former disappointment of not going anywhere. It rather annoyed me that we have lived less than 2 hours from the beach for four summers and had not made it over there yet!

Finally, off we went to Ocean Shores, parking at the Casino for $10 a night. Since it's only a quarter mile walk to the beach, that's a great deal. It doesn't bother me that it's nothing more than a gravel parking spot, but parking where you can hear the ocean? Smell the salt water? Oh, yeah. Happy Camper time.

After getting settled, I was off to the beach to get some sand between my toes. It was lovely weather, just the right amount of warm with a gentle breeze accompanied by the sound of the surf. Delicious. Walking in sand makes me feet happy--except when it's hot, then, not so much. But the hard wet sand near the surf is cool and inviting. We walked along for awhile, then Jerry went off to run his high intensity interval training (HIIT). I continued to beach comb, then chased the waves letting them catch me. The water wasn't as cold as I expected. Still, I wasn't going in past my knees. Finally I headed for a place to settle into the sand. watch the waves and listen to the ocean song. To me there is no more healing sound than the ocean waves pounding the sand. A God symphony reminding me of His greatness and shrinking my worries.

Right from the first, I knew two days weren't going to be enough time to let the sea-song settle into me sufficiently. In our debate about a third day, we noticed and email from our home park informing us of the road treatment being applied that day. We didn't want to drive on it freshly applied, so we debated some more. Then we read the weather report. With record highs expected (111?!)  it seemed silly to return to Olympia before the weather cooled. A few emails and texts later, we were set to spend a week. Not only would I be missing out on the heat, I'd be able to stay near the beach indulging in my favorite sandy pastimes. I'm pretty sure a Happy Dance was involved here.

We also happened to be there the weekend of the Sand and Sawdust Days where there are amazing sand sculptures and chainsaw artists in various places around Ocean Shores. We enjoyed watching the artists at work with the chainsaws, but we were also glad to duck into the Convention Center with their air conditioning to visit the vendor booths. Yes, even at the beach it got hot, but not as hot as inland.

Three charming bears keeping an eye on everything.

Our picnic lunch was consumed from our truck on the beach in what became a beach parking lot with rows and rows of cars. We were late comers to the activities and found a place one row back from the waves so we could watch them while we ate. We soon found out why cars had moved--the tide was coming in! We watched in fascination as a couple of cars whose occupants were somewhere down the beach were threatened by the waves encroaching. Finally we felt it prudent to move and drove to the back of the parking area to take pictures of a series of sculptures. Jerry had to go back and take pictures of the one little white car with waves lapping at its tires. It got as high as the axles before we left, still wondering when the owners would arrive to discover their dilemma. The heavy duty tow truck we had seen nearby was likely going to get more business rescuing the unwary.

We returned home to discover trees and shrubs whose western facing leaves were burnt, unused to the triple digit temperatures and relentless sun. I was thankful to only loose one plant in the heat wave, with only a few burnt leaves on a couple of plants. My neighbor did a great job of watering all my plants and giving them love while I was away.

The saying "Timing is everything" was especially true for this jaunt to the coast. What a gift from Father God, showing the depth of His love and care. Sometimes He strengthens us to meet the challenges we face, and sometimes He whisks us away to a place of refreshing and rest. He's a good like that. And I am so thankful.

When I was sitting on the beach allowing the sand to flow through my fingers, I was reminded of the verse in Psalm 139:17-18:

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand

This thought arrested my attention: God, who knows me so well, loves me so much that He's thinking of me all the time. How many grains of sand were in just my hand? Looking up at the expanse of the sand stretching for miles, my mind was overwhelmed. Just one beach. Just one part of the world. Wow. His thoughts towards me are MORE in number than the sand. Jeremiah 29:11 says that His thoughts towards me are good! I love that. That's a LOT of good thoughts coming my way. Unfathomable. Delightful.

When I was younger I was unconsciously waiting for Him to strike me with lightning or something for messing up. Discovering that He's not like that has not only been a great relief, but a joy. His thoughts towards me are good. He loves me. I'm cool with that.

In His love I am secure and even when He must correct me, I know He has my best interests in mind. He does it so lovingly that I am strengthened and made better by it. Trusting His good plans for me, I don't hesitate any more to go to Him for everything and with everything. Peace, hope, wisdom. He has it all.

The beach is where I feel His presence the most. It is the place where I see this constant reminder of His love and how much bigger He is than my problems. In the pounding of the surf I hear deep call to deep; the deep of His love calls to the deepest part of me. This has been my best "YES" ever.

On the Road Again!

Fun gift and perfect for the road.
After several months at our summer home in Olympia, we have put away the deck furniture, battened down the hatches, and hit the road. This will be the first time to leave so soon, and we don't expect to return until May when the weather get nicer. I've really enjoyed the Fall weather which has mostly been beautiful, but I'm happy to be back on the road and headed for the desert and the many friends we've made on our travels. Before we left, we had a Holiday Celebration, rolling them all together; giving gifts, and eating until we were stuffed! And all before Halloween. Crazy! But efficient. I love the tea towel I got from my daughter; it says it all!

Looking out their kitchen window to our parking space, home for one night.

Dad is 91 and hanging in there!
My sisters, Judy and Sue sharing pics at Dad's place.
Our first stop was in Canby, OR to visit some dear friends we've know for decades. It was handy to be able to park right across the street from their house in the field they own. We had a good visit and the next morning it was on to Albany and sister Sue's place. As soon as we got parked on the street across from her house, we took off for Turner to go visit my Dad, with sister Judy meeting us there. It was fun to gather there and visit with Dad. He was greatly cheered up by our visit. After relaxing for the evening, we were off to bed early and then up before dawn the next day so we could get over the Siskiyou Mountains before the coming storm made our trip difficult. We had thought to spend a couple of days in the area, but the weather changed our plans and added some urgency to our departure. Thankfully, we only encountered a few sprinkles and had a good trip. Stopping several times for breakfast, potty breaks and walking helped to keep us from getting too tired. But now, settled in for the night in Corning, CA, we are glad to no longer to moving, and to be able to relax a bit before another day of travel.
Dinner was a green salad with avocados, steamed California Blend frozen veggies (appropriate!) with  and beef heart previously cooked, sliced and frozen and put in the steamer with the veggies. Yum! Top that off with Bubbies live sauerkraut and my homemade Curtido fermented cabbage mix and you have a delicious dinner. Desert you say? But of course: kefir cream with toffee flavored stevia, cocoa powder and nuts. I may have to cook all my food, but we're definitely not suffering.

Stocking up in Indio

While stocking up in Indio, we found this sauerkraut juice and had to get it. I used to hate sauerkraut, but since learning of its benefits, I started to eat a little here and there. Now a day doesn't go by without some sauerkraut to top my veggies, salad, eggs, whatever! I have found that We eat lots of Bubbies Sauerkraut and have come to appreciate how beneficial this live fermented food is for out health in so many ways. We (politely) argue over who gets the sauerkraut juice that's left over. I like it mixed in some bone broth for a powerful tonic and gut health. Every time I feel some kind of 'bug' sneaking up on me, I grab the juice and chug a couple of tablespoons full or so. For a stomach bug, nothing works quicker! It can turn it around in a matter of hours. Here is a website that goes into more detail on the benefits of sauerkraut and even how to make your own. Since most of the immune system is in the gut, it makes sense to take care of your gut to keep the immune system healthy and smart.

We were able to get quit a bit of my specialty foods in Indio before heading to Bouse where the options are slim. We didn't really do much besides shop and rest, but that was necessary and helpful.

Now, finally after parking in parking lots all the way down here, we're heading out into the desert!

Indio and sunshine

Front row view of the new gas station.
We had a surprise when we showed up at Tachi Palace Casino. In the area we like to park, they are building a new gas station and convenience store. When we woke up the next morning, we were surrounded by the workers' cars and trucks! But we had a great front row seat to the action. It was fun to watch to big equipment move stuff around and men framing up the walls.
We got to talking to our neighbors who turned out to be Fulltimers from Qualicum Beach,Vancouver Island, Canada. They are on their way home, but wondering if they should delay a bit due to the weather; and no wonder with reports of snow in the Seattle area again. It got down to freezing in the night here, and without hookups, it was pretty chilly until we could get the generator going. But under the covers, it was all cozy and warm. Who needs to get up? We're retired, right?!
We did manage to get out and about, getting groceries in nearby Hanford. Then I went over to the Kings Outreach Ministry. The peace of this place permeates and refreshes. There is an area set up for people to pray, to meet with God. It's a shoes-off area with a really soft smaller carpet where you can kneel if you want to. His presence there is palpable, peaceful, loving, majestic, compelling. The sense of rest I came away with was profound. It's a special place run by such loving and kind people. Very memorable, and I'm so glad I got up!
I needed all that rest for the next leg of the trip all the way to Indio. Going over the Tehachapi Pass was easy, but of course I was a passenger. But we switched drivers near Boron, and heading south on 395 was a pretty rugged ride! Not only is the pavement rough in lots of spots, the wind kicked up to make it even more interesting. There were a few white knuckle areas and I was glad to switch drivers someplace past Redlands. We finally reached our destination of Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. They have a large RV parking lot and there are about 30 or more rigs here. We stayed here last year and found it a great place to stay for a few nights, plus it's close to stores where we cans stock up before we head out into the desert.
What a treat to wake up to warmth and sunshine! Although there are a few clouds today, we've had the windows open on the RV to enjoy the fresh air and warm breezes.

Back on the road

Good mobile RV Repair guy
Thursday the part came in and John did a great job not only replacing the controller for the slide, but I asked if he would swap out the bathroom faucet while he was there. I was not able to get it to budge and hoped he had better tools and experience, which he did. It was worth every penny to have him do that, especially after seeing how it had gotten rusty and fought him every step of the way. He's pretty reasonable, much less than calling in a plumber. If you're ever in the Redding area and need mobile RV repair, call John! He's a good guy. We were in Corning, but he came down there anyway. He was helping out his friend Chris who runs Campfire RV Repair in Corning who we had called. Chris has been having some health issues and John stepped up to help him keep his business afloat.

By noon, we were on our way, headed for Tachi Palace Casino in Lemoore, CA. Even though we got a late start, we decided to push on and not try to find a closer stopping point. Of course we hit Sacramento and Modesto when traffic was getting pretty thick, then with an accident earlier, it was stop and go for several miles. We finally pulled in at 8pm.

Almond trees in bloom
Along the way we saw an amazing amount of water. Places where where previously had been dry washes, sometimes with bridges baffling high, now rushed with muddy water. Reservoirs who were so sadly lacking in water now filled to the brim and then some. Evidence everywhere of the abundance of water, even an excess of water, caused us to be thankful for our enforced delay. Of course all that water helped to make things lovely and green, and blooming as are these almond trees.

And even more repairs....and some fun

When John from Cronic Mobile Service came Sunday, he found that the controller box for the slide needed replacing, and of course it needed to be ordered. Monday being President's Day, we knew we'd have a few days to wait. At least he was able to get the slide back in by powering the motor from his truck.

On Monday, we visited a delightful store, S&S Produce in Chico, where we got organic veggies, some tinctures and supplements, and some chicken wings and feet to make broth! I love restocking from the delightful variety of health food stores I find on our travels. Each one is unique and it's fun to find what's familiar as well as new things. Hey, it's my thing! Some women visit quilt shops, or yarn shops. I visit health food stores!

Now that the slide was in and we could move the rig, we took the motorhome in to Corning Ford on Tuesday to see what was going on. As we suspected, an engine coil needed replacing. We have already had 2 replaced, and it looks like the other seven will need to be replaced at some point, but not today.

While they had our rig, we took off in the truck to see what there was to see in Corning. They are very big on olives around here. "Olive City" is incorporated into the names of many of their businesses. There are miles of olive groves and several olive companies in town.

After visiting the library, we happened upon the Chamber of Commerce where we got some info about where to find the olive oil. They have a small museum in the same building which was fun to look at. Then we did a little walk around town, which isn't very big, and then went to Lucero's to check out their olive oil. It was a fun experience for me, but Jerry wasn't going to taste any, thank you very much. :I bought a couple of bottles of great olive oil which I'm sure won't last me very long!

I had to get a picture of the water tower because it reminds me of the song "Water Tower Towns" sung by Scotty McCreary, my favorite Country Western song and singer. And, no, I'm not really a CW fan, but there are some that I like. We also saw Bartel's Giant Burgers and had to take a picture for my sister whose last name is Bartel.

After picking up our fixed up rig, which drove beautifully, we settled back in at Rolling Hills Casino parking lot for another night to wait for the next fix on the list. Hopefully it will come tomorrow. I appreciate being able to park overnight at a Casino, but more than 2 nights gets a bit tedious, especially busy ones like this. Lots of trucks coming and going, lots of generators. But, still, a safe place and no flooding!

More repairs....

After stopping in Roseburg to get new tires for the truck, we stopped at Seven Feathers Casino in Canyonville, OR, where they have free dry camp RV Parking. We filled up on gas and propane and settled in for the night. The next morning as my careful husband was doing a check on everything, he noticed one of the motorhome tires low--again! So he pumped it up, but was concerned since he had just pumped it up in Turner. Off to Les Schwab tires 5 minutes away. Turns out it had a faulty valve where it would hold air sometimes and not others. It was nice to get it replaced with a longer valve stem and have all tires checked. We were thankful we could get it fixed without a repeat of the truck tire adventure. We had hoped to be on the road earlier since we'd be going over the Siskiyous and knew it would be a fairly long day of driving before we arrived at the Rolling Hills Casino dry camp area.
Southern Oregon looking green and beautiful, although soggy!

In previous years, when getting south of Redding, the weather warmed up, tank tops came out, and we saw sunshine! Not this year. Rain, more rain, flooding and about the same temperature as at home. The great irony is that Olympia was warmer and with sunshine, while we were getting inundated with rain. And another storm is expected, even worse than previously. You just never know!

When passing Corning, we saw a "FORD, RV Repairs" sign. Since we have a Ford Chassis, we tucked this useful bit of info away for future reference. When getting near to the Casino and parking, the occasion missing that engine had been doing (especially uphill) had increased. Well, clearly we needed to visit the Ford RV Repair place the next day! We called and got an appointment for in the morning, made preparations, and went to bed early. The next morning, we went to pull in the slide....it wouldn't budge. Really?! So we called them and told them we wouldn't be there when expected, and they said that was fine because there are so many road closures due to flooding that some people (both workers and clients weren't going to make it there today). Oh, and by the way, there is a manual override systems on the slides.

Huh. Well clearly today's lesson is on how the slide mechanism works and how to do the manual override. Out came the Owner's Manual. Uh huh. Who wrote this? Lacking in crucial details, at the very least. After hours of research and trying various things, it was time to call a mobile RV repair guy. He comes tomorrow.

Free day! Time do a pedicure, take a nap, and generally rest. I welcome the down time.

Indio to Borrego Springs

As we left Indio, we dumped tanks at the nearby water treatment place for free, always a nice thing! They didn’t have potable water, so we waited to find that later. Turns out the Red Earth Casino where we parked near Salton city had water. That was nice surprise. They also have a place to dump for $8, so we were glad to have found the place in Indio. We were visited by Bob and Trish Nesbitt as soon as we got there which was fun. We've known them for years and they have recently gone full time in their RV and we discovered they were in the same area as we were. Nice surprise! We visited them in their Thousand Trails park when we were nearby in Indio, then they decided to see the Salton Sea area again and visiting us gave them a good excuse. It was so nice to catch up!
this shows the mud flats exposed as the water recedes in the Salton Sea
Where once there was a pier and yacht club and resort at the Salton Sea
A nice little hike up a hill overlooking our rig.
We left the Salton Sea area heading West over a seriously bad road! For about the first 5 miles, it was pretty rugged. In spots we could go no faster than 3 – 5 mph, sometimes as much as 15mph. I got pretty excited when we got all the way up to 35mph! Then suddenly the road was good (we crossed the county line) and it was full steam ahead. Up over some hills and around some curves we passed the off-road vehicle areas where there was lots of sand and hills. Farther on we entered the Anza-Borrego State Park which is HUGE! It completely surrounds the town of Borrego Springs. We were following directions to a Boondocker Group’s previous gathering and found the spot easily. Jerry had read that it was a favorite boondocking site for several people and it's easy to see why!
After finding our spot, we saw another Mountainaire nearby, so went over to introduce ourselves and found fellow Escapees! (Dean and Judy) We had never met, but they knew people we knew. Another couple (Jan and Chuck Moore) joined them a few days later whom we had met the previous year. It was fun to join them for some social time. Since we all have Moutainaires and are Escapees, there was no lack of things to talk about.
It was so wonderful to be back out in the desert after parking in casino parking lots for most of our trip so far. The wide open spaces, the gorgeous mountains surrounding us, the warmth of the sun during the day, the amazing sunsets. We even had hummingbirds do several inspections of our rig, and I saw a roadrunner chasing something in the bushes!

Farther up Rockhouse Rd from where we are camping there is Clark Dry Lake.

Wind and then some

From Tachi Palace, we decided to go by a different route and bypass the LA area completely. We went East from Bakersfield up through Tehachapi, past Edwards Air Force Base and over to Boron and down through San Bernadino. About 20 miles West of Palm Springs we stopped at Morongo Casino on I-10 where we stayed on our return trip last year. They have moved the RVers to a different lot farther away, but that gives us a nice walk. It was a bit breezy and after one night we decided to move to Indio since the weather report was indicating high winds. Morongo is between two mountain ranges which creates a bit of a funnel, and I didn't like the sound of 40 - 60 mph winds coming through there!

At Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, we hunkered down and endured the wind and sand storm at a mere 20 - 35 mph. Visibility was about 50 ft, which is odd in a place where 3 miles looks more like a half a mile. Our neighbor's rooftop carrier got opened up by the wind, so Jerry braved the sandstorm to go over and tell him, and then we watched as he got up on the roof and secured it. I was concerned for his safety up there, but he seemed to have very steady footing and was able to get the job done and get down just fine. I was still glad to see his feet safely on the ground!

I have the handy NOAA app which gives hourly indications of temperature as well as wind speed and direction, so we were thankful to know which way to park our rig and well as how long we would want to keep our slide pulled in. There was wind over the next few days off and on, and one night the direction had changed and we had our sleep disrupted by the pushing of the gusts as well as the whine of the wind over and under us. I was glad to have earplugs to be able to go back to sleep!

Corning to Lemoore

The next leg of our trip took us from Corning to Lemoore, CA. We stayed at the Tachi Palace Casino last year and the security guys were very friendly. It's out in the middle of farm country where everything is very flat.

Last year we had driven past a place that I wanted to check out,  so this time I had a chance to do so. It's called Kings Outreach Ministries. I checked their website and decided to go see them.  It is, a couple who run a prayer and renewal center where people from all over come to stay  a few days or a month. It once was a boys ranch. I had the opportunity to receive some prayer and it was so refreshing.  I definitely want to return and hopefully spend more time.

It's always interesting to figure out shopping when in a new area,  especially smaller towns. I get excited when I find familiar brands unexpectedly. I'm always looking for things and looking around,  unlike my home store where I know where everything is and be very efficient. Of course shopping on the road takes on a bit of the Tourist Attraction feel as we compare what's the same and what's different from home.

After leaving Albany and having some time to play around with my computer,  I discovered that even reinstalling the OS doesn't fix its glitchiness. It works sort of,  but won't open files and generally is uncooperative. It was ok to surf the net for awhile,  but now even that isn't working. It's not that old,  but the warrantee had run out so it's back to my phone.  I'm getting pretty good at this,  but the reading glasses are a must!

When I figure out how to grab the pics on my phone I'll add some. Until then,  it's just verbage. :-)

And so we go.....!

We stayed 2 nights in Albany since it took all day for my brother-in-law to save my files and then reinstall the operating system and do all the updates. I am so glad he was able to retrieve all of my data, most of which was backed up except for the most recent documents. Hopefully it will continue to play nice since doing a blog on my smart phone is not my idea of fun!

It was nice to have that extra day to rest up after all the preparations and not just push on with the travel. That's one thing we learned last year,  that we don't have to be in a hurry and having lots of travel breaks makes it less exhausting.

Snow over the pass, but roads bare.
We are currently parked at Rolling Hills Casino south of Redding, CA by about 40 miles. We parked last night at the Rest Stop in Canyonville, although we could have parked at the casino there, too. We did stock up on propane and gas. It rained like crazy on and off all night, and we were glad to see it had tapered off by this morning. Yesterday driving from Albany to Eugene and parts south was very windy and there were some white-knuckle moments. I was glad to not be driving that stretch. Instead I got the fun of driving through Portland at 5pm on Tuesday. I know, not the greatest timing, but we got through. Portland is still not as bad as Seattle!

Truck stop in Weed, CA, with Mt Shasta in the background
We didn't get any great shots of Mt. Shasta since there was a large cloud hat sitting on top, but we tried.

Once again, in one day we traveled over the Siskiyous, saw snow on the sides of the road, and arrived here ready to trade sweatshirts for tank tops!

Into Oregon

Mountain Aire Meet-up!
Staying overnight at a casino that caters to truck drivers makes for a rather noisy and crowded stay. When we first drove into Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, CA, we saw these two other Mountain Aires like ours, so we parked between them. We got to chat with both owners and found that they were a '98, '99 (ours) and 2000! All in a row. We decided we must be a Mountain Aire Rally! It was fun to see the 2000 inside since it looks so much like ours but it had custom features....and it was blue! I almost gave them my number and told them that if they decided to sell to call me first! Amazingly, between us all there were two trucks and another RVer parked! I am astonished at how close those truck drivers can park their rigs. They have some real skill!
Since it was a bit noisy, we were up and on the road pretty early for us. We decided to postpone breakfast and just took off after gassing up. Breakfast was at a Truck stop near Weed, CA where we gassed up again and took a bit of a break after two hours of driving.
It was an exciting moment (for me) when we crossed the state line into Oregon! Back in my home country. Ah, breathe the air!
A restful stop.
The next break was between Medford and Grants Pass at a Rest Stop that also has a State Park next to it. Not only are there lots of BIG trees around here, I also saw MOSS for the first time in over 3 months! I had a lovely walk here which made a great break from the road.
We had planned to make a stop for a night or two at Timber Valley SKP park in Sutherlin, but we were doing so well we decided to just keep going.
We finally pulled onto my sister's street in Albany around 6pm, having done just over 400 miles that day. We were glad to get off the road! With the permission of her neighbors, we were able to park across from her house for a couple of nights and have a lovely visit.

Casinos

We have stayed at several casinos on this trip. Not only is it free (yes, free!) but security is generally making periodic sweeps so it feels pretty safe. Plus they are usually paved lots, mostly level, which is a plus. And one can sometimes find friends there! On a few of them we have gone inside, but I find the inside to be rather depressing and fail to see the attraction of sitting at a machine feeding it money. Plus people can smoke inside which I prefer not to inhale. I am appreciative of the fact these people feeding the machines is what builds these places and we get to park there. For free. Thank you.
Morongo Casino
On our way homeward, we stayed at a very LARGE casino. Morongo Casino and Spa in Cabazon, CA. This is the largest one we’ve seen yet. The hotel is maybe 15 or more stories high and looks like something out of a Sci-Fi film with the top part all lit up as a moving bill board at night. In the daytime it just looks blue.
They also have a huge water park next to it, a parking garage several stories high, and acres of parking including an area just for RVers to park. While walking around the parking lot for exercise, it’s fun to see the other rigs that people have and to wave at fellow RVers. Some casinos have big rig/RV parking areas and the trucks are in and out and run their diesel motors, so they can be noisier. This one was pretty quiet.

We stayed an extra night for rest, plus we finally caught the rat and had to clean up after him. He made quite a mess under the sinks and under the dashboard. When I heard chewing sounds from the dash area, I knew he was still with us and we had to get rid of him quick before he did some serious damage! Fortunately the banana-in-the-rat-trap worked. We knew he liked them from the large hole he’d left the day before in the bananas; an undeniable clue that he was still aboard.
Desert Diamond Casino in Sahuarita, AZ just south of Tucson where we went after Escapade.
